Viennese Modernism

Data base on primary and secondary literature in the research context of science, politics and the public.

[ LESS … ]

For many areas of Austrian art, culture, and intellectual history, “Vienna around 1900” (“Fin de Siècle”) is still regarded as the time of the breakthrough of an avant-garde modernism in Central Europe. Accordingly, the primary focus of scientific research on the “Wiener Moderne” was set on progressive efforts in the areas of philosophy, literature, music, architecture, the plastic arts, etc. As a result, a central moment in the “Wiener Moderne” has so far received only little attention: the popularisation and democratisation of scientific rationality. Viennese popular education played an essential role in the social processes of diffusion of modern scientific ways of thinking and acting.

The data base contains about 5,000 quotations of contemporary primary and recent secondary literature and, for the first time, enables one to grasp the meaning of this important field of tension for scientific theory between the academic sciences and the interested lay public.

Possible enquiries according to the following topic areas:

- Theory of the popularisation of science and/or popular science
- General literature on the intellectual and cultural history of the “Wiener Moderne”
- Schools and universities (school reform/university reform)
- Neutral public education, workers' education, women's education, Catholic adult education
- Reception of science in the media (press, popular literature, radio, cinema)
- Reception of science in the tense field of political concepts and ideologies
- Popularisation of science in the European comparison (primarily German-speaking areas)

A continuous expansion and updating of the data base is provided by an editorial system.
