The conference is organized by European Society for Research on the Education of Adults (ESREA) Network on Gender and Adult Learning in co-operation with the University of Montpellier 3 in Montpellier, France (Department of adult training - SUFCO).

First two conferences of the Network were held in Bochum (1999) and Geneva (2001). A book was published in 2003 incorporating papers from the two conferences: DYBBROE Betina, OLLAGNIER Edmée Ed. The third meeting took place in Wroclaw (2004) as an ESREA post-conference seminar, and next ones in Geneva (2005) and in Olsztyn (2007). The last conference was held in Hull (2009). Another book was published in 2008 incorporating papers from the conferences in Geneva and Olsztyn: OSTROUCH Joanna, OLLAGNIER Edmée Ed.
